We all have had our first rave to go to and we have asked ourselves, what is this all about? What do I expect, what do I wear, how should I act? There was something or someone who got us to this point. Either it was a song we couldn’t get out of our heads or a friend who wanted us to join them on an adventure. No matter what the circumstance, you are about to go to your first rave and you don’t know exactly what to expect or how to roll. It’s all good! We all started out here and you can fret about not doing it right or being judged because your not “hip” with it” but the fact of the matter is that you are the master of your own fate and if you treat people right,  you will be alright.

I have personally been going to raves for about 16 years now and I think the best advise I can give you is to be respectful. Not only respectful of the other people but also respect yourself. Go for the music. That’s what raves are, they are electronic music venues. The DJ’s work incredibly hard to entertain you, unite you and show you a new perspective. Don’t go to get laid, do drugs and make an ass out of yourself.

There is a reason that the ravers creed is “PLUR” or “PLURR”.

This stands for : Peace | Love | Unity | Respect | Responsibility

These are the values our underground community cherish and try to foster in our dealings with other ravers.

Once you go to a couple raves you will notice that you will start to understand the deeper meaning of these words and hopefully find your “raver family”.

So what to wear?

Wear sensible shoes! I can’t stress this enough! No high heels or crazy platforms that you are going to break an ankle in dancing! Sneakers/Tennis Shoes are the best foot wear for raves as you are going to be dancing.. a lot.

Think about the type of venue you are going to. Is it going to be inside or outside, is it going to be in the middle of winter or summer. Remember that like any other event, you need to dress appropriately for the weather and venue type. Use common sense when making your wardrobe decisions.

Wear clothing that will let you move freely. There’s nothing worse then trying to dance in uncomfortable clothing.

Guys find that wearing phat pants and a funky TShirt allows them to shuffle/dance more easily. As apposed to tight fitting pants and muscle shirts.

Girls, you have tons of great options when it comes to rave attire. You can kick it old school in phat pants and a cute Tee. Or you can go for the New School route with Fluffies, a Mini Skirt or Booty Shorts and a crop top or bikini top.

Remember Originality is the key here! Raves are a way to express your truest self. Show the world how unique and imaginative you can be. Making your own outfits or buying handmade one of a kind items help you stand out in the crowd and get noticed. It’s also a great ice breaker and super way to meet new friends.

One of the main reasons I started my business was because I always met so many incredible people just b/c I had made my outfit from scratch. It was a wonderful feeling meeting like minded people who dug what I made and inspired me to share my creations with my “rave family” and allow them to experience that same great feeling of originality and uniqueness.

If you have any questions about what to wear, just post em in the comments section and I will help you out as best I can :)

Sex, Drugs and Techno~

Like I said before, you should be going to your first rave because of the MUSIC! Not the Drugs, Not the Sex, yadda yadda yadda…

Hey, I don’t judge anyone, ever. I’m not going to lie to you either. I’ve raved on drugs and I’ve gone to raves completely sober. Either way, I had a brilliant time. If you choose to do drugs, I suggest doing it responsibly.  Click here and read about being a responsible raver.

My only comment on sex is it’s your business. Might I suggest though, that you use protection as not to catch something or get knocked up.

There are many sites on the web with great information. If I missed something, post a comment and I will try to help you out. You can also use this really nifty new thing called the interwebs to search for the answer to your particular question. Honestly, I’m sure someone has had the same question as you and I’m sure you will find the answer fairly quickly.

I hope this helps the next generation of ravers. I’m looking forward to meeting you newbies at the next big event!

Have fun and party safe M’Friends!

  • Great, informative article. I did want to ask you a question though in regards to clothing choices:

I come from a Goth/Industrial scene that I really enjoy, leaning towards a “Rivethead” style fashion-wise, whereas my (older) brother is a full-on Kandi Kid. He and I are going to a Massive (I believe that’s what the bigger parties are called) in a month as my first rave, and I’m expecting good times all around. He know’s that, while I won’t go full on “Kandi Status”, I will shift my style to a more Cybergoth vibe. That being said, everywhere I read people talk about baggy, comfortable clothes for the party, where I personally would rather be wearing combat-cargo’s and boots.

Can you help me out in finding a happy medium? Shirts, pants, and shoes in particular.

  • Hi,

Thank you ever so much! I really appreciate your comment :0) Honestly I believe you should wear what ever you want. If you like combat cargos and boots, then go for it! I have never heard or seen anyone diss someone because of what they are wearing. Most ravers are respectful of others choices. If you are in doubt about your choice of clothing, put it on, put on a song that you can dance to and then dance your butt off to it. If the clothing you are wearing is comfortable and you feel you can spend all night in that outfit, then go for it! Screw what anyone thinks. It’s all about what you think. No worries, just have a good time. Your personality is the best thing you can wear at any event anyway. If you have any other questions, please let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

  • Hi! my friend has invited me to my firstrave. our plan was that i would sleepover at her house and her older friend will pick us up. i was thinking of wearing some shorts and a red crop top with sneakers. would that be appropriate?

  • Hey!

Definitely sounds appropriate! As long as you are comfortable and you won’t be cold, I say go for it! Thanks so much for stopping by and have a superdeedooper awesome time!!

  • I’m 14 and am planning on going to my first rave. I am going with my friend who is 15 and her cousin who is 17. I was just wondering if this is a good age? And do you have any advice?

  • Friday december 13 I went to my fisrst rave with my best friends. Zeds dead was playing that night it was ey opening and thrilling experience. On my behalf thank you for taking time to write this

  • Hey so I don’t have any idea how to shuffle but I want to learn as soon as possible, would it be like acceptable if I wore phat pants,,, even though I don’t shuffle? I am making my own and I really want to wear them to my first bigger rave *Excision* :D

  • Hey Lyric,

You can wear phat pants or any other item of clothing any time you wish. No one is going to judge you, I promise :) Phat pants aren’t just for shufflers. Actually Shuffling is quite new in the rave world and old schoolers will give you mad props for being yourself and wearing what you want to wear. There’s so many people these days putting unnecessary worry into their wardrobe. Going to a rave is about having fun with your friends and enjoying amazing music that moves their soul. Just have fun and enjoy! If you want to learn to shuffle there are many videos on youtube to help but it is not mandatory. Dance in any fashion that makes you happy and at the end of the day, you’ll be glad you did.

    Mad Love and Huge Hugs,

  • Darren,

I’m so happy to hear you had an amazing time! Thank you so much for sharing! Cheers to many more events that make your heart complete!!

    Mad Love and Huge Hugs,

  • Hi Carla,

Since I don”t know what type of event you are going to or the people you are going with, I can’t give an informed answer. I will just break it down freestyle for now. If your friends are responsible and you trust them with your life, I say run it past your parents. They will know better then I if you are responsible enough to handle this type of event. At your age, you must make sure your parents know where you are, what time you are supposed to be home, who you are with and let them decide if this is a good idea. I know that I went to lots of concerts and raves at 14 but my parents were always in the loop and made sure I got home safe. I cannot condone lying or sneaking around b/c in the long run it is bad for you and it is also bad for the people you’re with and your parents. Please be safe and think things through before going to any event or concert.

If you need any other advise, please let me know and I’d be happy to help as much as I can.

  • Okay, so I just purchased my ticket for my first rave and am super stoked to go. I am a little worried about my outfit though, I’m planning on kicking it old school going in phat pants, a t-shirt and a long hood embellished with neon/ reflective purple, pink and orange yarn. The doubt comes in when I got back to the fact that everything but the yarn will be black, I always feel like there should be more color but I come from a goth background so whenever I try to add some it always seems awkward to me. Any helpfulness?

  • Congrats on your first rave! I’m sure you’ll have a wonderful time. As far as your outfit is concerned, it sounds just fine. Personally I wouldn’t worry so much about it. It’s those little things that make it unique to you. Run with it. No one is going to be picking your outfit apart or even notice the things that are bothering you. Who knows, that might be the thing that gets you noticed by a kindred soul who loves that style. *Huge Hugs and Mad Love* ~Shayna
